THE CHALLENGE

Situated in a Greater Western Sydney suburb, this property was an old-build, with modern, internal finishes.

It was evident upon the initial inspection that the property had sustained fire and smoke damage due to a cooking accident, in which the stove caught alight, damaging the stove ventilation system and benchtop.

The event had caused fire damage to the kitchen ceiling, walls, door and window frames, linoleum flooring, kitchen cupboards and contents such as cutlery. The smoke travelled throughout the home, but there was visible damage to the adjoining dining room walls, ceiling, window frames and contents.

The attending MCA Group technician checked the moisture throughout the property and was able to report that no structural drying was necessary.

The occupant of the property was preparing dinner, when the oil in the stovetop pan caught alight. While discussing the event with the Insured occupant, one of MCA Group’s Customer Service Team Members was able to learn that the incident occurred within only a matter of minutes; the oil overheated with the vapours bursting into flames.

MCA GROUPS WORKS

MCA Group began works with organising a licensed electrician to attend the property to isolate the stovetop and rangehood. Once isolated, these items were able to be removed and disposed of, providing access to complete the required works.

MCA Group then proceeded with works, including setting up air purification units in the affected rooms. These devices are used to lower the levels of airborne particles, and work to improve the indoor air quality.

The attending technicians then began to work on removing the smoke and soot from all affected surfaces. This required the ceiling and walls to be wiped clean, using a dry chemical sponge, and a heavy-duty degreaser to wash all contents, and wipe surfaces and hard floor coverings. At completion, the property underwent thermal fogging – a process that removes smoke odour.

We were able to complete these works within a 7-hour period, which meant the occupants were able to come home on the same day.
