CREATE AN EMERGENCY PLAN

CREATE AN EMERGENCY PLAN

With the unpredictable weather events occurring throughout Australia, it is more important now than ever to ensure your home and family are prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.

Fires and floods are becoming more frequent in today’s climate and has prompted a lot of homeowners to consider what they would do in the instance that their home was in the path of these disasters.

If, however, you find yourself still unprepared, check out our key tasks below.

DESIGNING THE PLAN

The time before storm season may be some of the most crucial, giving you the opportunity to prepare for the uncertain.

  • Check your insurance policy, ensuring it is current and you have the right cover for you and your home
  • Keep trees trimmed, making sure they are clear of powerlines
  • Regularly keep guttering clear of debris
  • Store important documents (i.e. birth certificates, passports) in sealable plastic sleeves, ensuring they are readily available if you and your family need to quickly evacuate
  • Scan important photographs or other important documents (i.e. insurance policies and documents worth identification points), and upload to a cloud drive
  • Secure loose items around your property
  • Prepare a storm kit (see our guide below) and make sure everyone knows where it’s located
  • In the possibility of high flood waters, identify indoor items that should be raised above level
  • Discuss what to do with your pets

WHEN YOU KNOW AN EVENT IS COMING

Being prepared for an oncoming emergency event is crucial in minimising the effects and recoil on you and your family. Below are a few things that you can do in the lead up to an emergency, such as a storm event:

  • Charge all electrical devices
  • Make sure any evacuation vehicle has a full tank of petrol
  • Ensure all members of the household are aware of any necessary plans and procedures
  • Listen to, and follow, local authorities

DURING THE EVENT

Remaining safe should be the most important step to take during an emergency, however, there are a few other things to consider:

  • If there’s lightening, safely turn off and unplug electrical appliances
  • Continue to listen to, and follow, local authorities
  • Stay away from all windows and external doors

PREPARE A STORM KIT

A storm kit should contain vital items that you and other members of the household may need during or after a severe storm event. It is recommended that the following items be kept in an easily accessible, waterproof box:

  • A three-day supply of tinned and non-perishable food with manual can opener
  • Bottled water
  • Battery-operated equipment such as radio and torch
  • Spare batteries
  • First aid kit including necessary medications and personal hygiene items
  • Portable phone charger
  • Garbage bags
  • Antibacterial hand & body wipes
